Delhi NCR Air quality : what you need to know , 3 WAYS TO OVERCOME FROM IT……………

Delhi NCR has been grappling with air pollutants for years . The Delhi NCR[ National Capital Region]air quality has become a major fot its residents , visitors and the government . now in this article we will let you know about the current condition of Delhi NCR Air Quality .

Air pollution is no longer a problem of Delhi and its municipalities, but the National Capital Region (NCR) is also affected. According to Union Environment Minister’s shri Bhupender yadav  the Centre and the four NCR states will have to work together to tackle this problem.

This is a large airshed of pollution which includes Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and even the Alwar region of Rajasthan.

In geography, an airshed is defined as an area that shares common characteristics with respect to the spread of atmospheric pollutants. In other words, an area that shares a common flow of air is called an airshed. According to experts, the measures taken to reduce air pollution in Delhi need to be implemented in the entire NCR because the NCR areas share the same airshed as the National Capital Region [NCR].  According to the environment minister, the Centre has taken several steps to reduce air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR, including opening of the peripheral expressway around the national capital. Regulations are also being brought in to reduce traffic congestion in non-Delhi areas and to manage construction and demolition debris, which can also become a source of dust if not managed properly.

Law Against Delhi NCR  Air Pollutants

To deal with the ever-increasing problem of air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Center has introduced a new law through an ordinance which will come into force with immediate effect. Violation of the provisions has been provided with a jail term of five years or a fine of up to one crore rupees or both. This ordinance can be named the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Ordinance, 2020. It will also be applicable in the National Capital Region and adjoining areas where the cases are related to air pollution.

It is worth noting that these days the lockdown done during COVID-19 is being reopened by the government. In such a situation, it is natural for the level of air pollution to increase again in Delhi and its surrounding areas. Also, with the arrival of cold weather, its severity increases further. The high level of toxicity of air pollution in and around Delhi is posing a very serious threat. This severity has been made even worse by the changing weather conditions. The changing weather has worsened the situation by trapping the pollutants in the air.

Now first of all, let us shed light on the reasons behind this increasing pollution in Delhi NCR

It is worth noting that the Delhi National Capital Region [NCR] its border with the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. One of the main reasons for the increasing level of air pollution in Delhi is the burning of responsible factor for the increasing air pollution in Delhi.

Another reason we see is that with the onset of winter, dust particles and other pollutants in the air become stable and are unable to spread elsewhere. Due to stagnant winds, these pollutants get trapped in the air and affect the weather conditions; resulting in the formation of smog. Another reason for air pollution in the National Capital Region is the high population. Excessive population leads to an increase in various types of pollution, whether it is air pollution or noise pollution. Low investment in public infrastructure is also cited as one of the other causes of air pollution. Investment in the field of public transport and infrastructure in India is very low, That is  why the country is facing such a huge problem.

If we talk about air pollution, when the amount of one or more pollutants in the atmosphere increases so much that the quality of air starts deteriorating and when it becomes harmful for the community, then it is called air pollution.

On the basis of origin, air pollutants are divided into two main types-

1 Natural Pollutants: These pollutants are emitted from natural sources or natural activities. Such as pollen and volatile organic compounds of plants, gases emitted from volcanic eruptions and decay of organic matter. Generally, the concentration of natural emissions is low and they do not cause serious harm.

2 Anthropogenic Pollutants: Secondary pollutants are formed as a result of chemical reactions between primary pollutants and normal atmospheric compounds under the influence of electromagnetic radiations of the sun.

For example: Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a primary pollutant, reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide (SO3), a secondary pollutant.

How is air quality measured?

If the AQI of an area is between zero to 50 then the AQI is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 AQI is considered ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 is considered ‘moderate’, if the AQI of a place is between 201 to 300 then the AQI of that area is considered ‘bad’. If the AQI is between 301 to 400 then it is considered ‘very bad’ and if the AQI is between 401 to 500 then it is considered in the ‘severe’ category. Air pollution can cause many types of diseases. On this basis, GRAP category restrictions are imposed in Delhi-NCR. Let us tell you that GRAP-4 is applicable.

Effects of Poor Delhi NCR Air Quality

1 Economic impact poor air quality may leeds  to increased in healthcare  costs like medical expenses ,lost productivity , mortality costs etc. Air pollutions – relates illness , such as respiratory problems and cardiovascular diseases that results in healthcare cost and expanses.

Beyond heath related costs , air pollution also has non healthcosts , issues like  agriculture losses, environmental damage and tourism and revenue losses .

2 Respirotary problems – Respiratory problem are  health concern in areas with poor air quality , such as Delhi  NCR . It can cause diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary doseases[COPD] and bronchitis.

3 Enviromental impact- Air pollution can damage crops ,forests and other vegetation including agricultural productivity . The ozone  and nitrogen dioxide present in pollutants air that causes damage to plants, that leads to reduce growth of and yields.

Steps to follow that improve Delhi NCR Air Quality

1 Download  Air Quality App –  Government has launches several applications like Air Quality Index[AIQ] , Air Now , SAFAR to check the current air quality .Stay in touch with all t

these applications .

2 Check Social Media – stay connected with social media . Follow government  agencies , air quality monitoring station and environmental organisation on social media to stay updated .
